Make Time to Relax and Recharge Yourself

Take Little Breaks

When you are running your own business, it’s so important to takes periodic breaks so you can recharge yourself. If you’re on the job, stopping to relax (and grab a bite of food) for a 10-15 minute break every 2-3 hours is imperative to continue doing what you’re doing well.

It’s easy to always be busy always doing something. What can sometimes be challenging is taking time for yourself to relax and unwind. You can only go for so long until you need a break or you might break.

Our bodies are organic machines. After so much use a battery needs recharging or it will have no energy left and it will cease to function. So it is with our minds and bodies. They need rest from time to time or we burn out and other things in our life may suffer. Our health, relationships, etc. can be negatively affected if we’re running on adrenaline all the time.

I’m writing this article today as a reminder for myself, because I’ve been going pretty hard lately in my business and life with hardly any down time. It’s showing in my mood and I know if I don’t relax and unwind a little, I know there will be collateral damage.

I know this is a principle anyone can apply in their lives and benefit from, so I hope this reminder encourages you to make a little time for yourself to chill. Some suggestions might include: going for a walk, cycling, hiking, observing nature, visiting a park, reading a book, sitting, taking a nap, getting a full night of sleep, etc.

Depending on your personality type, you might be more extrovert and may recharge by being around people more than an introvert personality type would. It’s good to know yourself and listen to yourself. Notice when you are doing too much, be aware of when you need a break in your routine, and then take a break or a time out from whatever you are doing.

You could go somewhere quiet and just relax and breath deeply for as little as five minutes to gain great benefit. Then go back to whatever you were doing and notice what a difference a short break made. That break may have restored some clarity and you may find it easier to focus again rather than being all over the place.

Do Something You Love

On your time off, it’s good to do something you enjoy. You might go do something a tourist would do when visiting your city. We get so busy in our businesses and live that we sometimes forget to see and experience the many interesting things where we live in our part of the world.

What do you enjoy doing that would take your mind off of your routine and make you feel better? Personally, I love being in nature and find it very recharging. I love cycling, zip lining, visiting mountain peaks, viewing things from high up, walking along the beach by the ocean, etc. I also love traveling and seeing new places in the world, taking pictures and videos and sharing them online.

Plan a Vacation

When you are really busy working at a job or building a business and life you love, you can get burned out if you don’t schedule down time for relaxation. Small breaks are important and larger breaks are important as well.

A vacation may look different to you depending on your personality type and your budget. It might be a weekend getaway or a day trip somewhere near where you live. It could also be a planned 7-14 day vacation somewhere beautiful and sunny. Depending on your business, your vacation budget and the freedom your business schedule allows, you may even take 1-3 months off in the winter.

I live in Canada and the window cleaning business typically slows down significantly here in December thru February every year, so this is our perfect vacation time to go somewhere nice and sunny since it rains and snows most of the time during winter here.

Depending on your business and life situation you might take a few days off once every month or so, and then a week or so every 3-6 months and then 2-4 weeks once a year to relax, experience things that refresh and rejuvenate you, and simply unwind and regroup. If you practice this, you will find the challenges of life and business become a little easier to deal with.
