The 3 Steps to Completing Any Project

There are three steps to completing any project in business and life. Sometimes we may get stuck in one of the first two steps and not end up completing the project, so it’s important to follow all 3 steps to successfully complete your project whatever it might be.

Step 1: Start

It sounds easy, yet sometimes you may get caught up so much in preparing for a project that you don’t even end up starting a project. At some point you must commit to starting your project if you ever want to complete it.

All you need to do to start is a decision and a commitment to start your project on a certain date, then follow through on the day you promised you would start your project. Once you have actually taken action toward starting your project, you can move to step 2 of the process.

Step 2: Focus

This step is where a lot of people drop the ball (myself included). In this time of information overload it’s easy to become distracted by technology, tasks, responsibilities, other projects and everyday life.

You absolutely must focus if you would like to complete your project. Depending on the size of your project, this could mean focusing and completing one task a day. If your project is starting a new business, you will have a long list of tasks to complete. You must focus on one task at a time and finish it, then move on to the next task.

Without applying this step to your project, you may never complete it, so you must focus consistently long enough to get your project done. Depending on the type of project you are undertaking, you may never be “done”.

When starting a new business there are many different tasks you have to focus on and complete, yet as a whole, your business will never be complete (If you are always seeking to improve it). You will reach a level where your business is much easier to manage and the tasks that were at one time challenging and difficult are now effortless and enjoyable for you. This requires a lot of focused effort to get your business to that point.

Personally, I have had a tough time focusing all through my life, yet when I learned this concept and applied it I have improved and you can too (if you find it tough to focus). If you do find it challenging to focus for long periods, you might try focusing on a task for a select time period, then take a break for a few minutes to relax or do something else, and then come back to your task reinvigorated to continue.

Step 3: Finish

Many people can get stuck in one of the first two steps of completing a project. They might start many projects and never focus long enough to finish any of them. Or they may focus on one project consistently and never actually finish the project.

This is where step three is such an important part of this 3-step process. If you start a project, then focus on each task long enough, there will be an end to the project and you must see it through to completion to actually finish your project.

Again, if it is a business you are starting, your finish marker could be a yearly income goal or some other thing that would make you feel you have finished your project. (It might even be the sale of your company.)

No matter what your project is, you don’t want to get caught spinning your wheels in one of the first two steps. If you consistently take baby steps through this process, you can complete any task, goal, project of any sort. The time it takes you to complete your project is up to you. You can do it as fast or as slow as you like and you must take consistent action long enough to see the results you would like to see.

I agree with the ‘one task at a time’ process. The part many people miss is working backward from a completion date noted in a calendar to be sure they have allowed enough time to reach Step 3 when they need to.

  2. Great post, I know plenty of people who start and don’t focus or finish. Thanks for posting.
